Mazagon – Stories of bombay’s precincts with Captain Ramesh Babu (ret.), Zeenat Kulavoor, Rahul Reddy, Nikhil Mahashur & Asad Lalljee
Mazagon, a historic precinct of Mumbai, has transformed from a humble fishing village into a vibrant testament to the city’s diverse heritage. As we continued Avid Learning’s Uncovering Urban Legacies series, we explored this microcosm of rich history and culture.
The architectural landscape features landmarks like the Hasanabad Mausoleum, Magen David Synagogue, and the Chinese Kwan Kung Tai Shek, each telling unique stories of its inhabitants. Matharpacady Village, with its charming Portuguese-inspired homes and lively festivals, offers a glimpse into the traditions of the East Indian Christian community, one of Mumbai’s oldest. Mazagon serves as a beautiful reminder of the city’s multicultural identity.

Our panel featured Captain Ramesh Babu (Ret.), author of “My Own Mazagon”; Zeenat Kulavoor, typographer and design director at Bombay Duck Designs; Rahul Reddy, founder of Subko Speciality Coffee Roasters; and Nikhil Mahashur, architect, restorer, and founder of Nikhil Mahashur & Associates and Walkitecture. Together, they unearthed stories that reveal Mazagon as a living lens into Mumbai’s enduring spirit.
