Khotachiwadi – Stories of Bombay’s precincts with André Baptista, Srila Chatterjee, James Ferreira, Nikhil Mahashur, & Asad Lalljee
One of the most vibrant stops on our journey in Avid Learning’s “Uncovering Urban Legacies – Stories of Bombay’s Precincts” was the Khotachiwadi precinct, where we explored its colourful lanes with architect and restorer Nikhil Mahashur. This historic village is known for its charming wooden balconies, stained glass windows, and sloping roofs, which reflect a unique blend of native Maharashtrian, East Indian Christian, and Portuguese architectural influences.

Once a peaceful village, Khotachiwadi has transformed into a creative hub, attracting artists, designers, and cultural enthusiasts. Despite this evolution, it has preserved the spirit of old Bombay, offering a captivating fusion of tradition and modernity. The panel featured André Baptista, archaeologist & academic; Srila Chatterjee, artistic & cultural curator; James Ferreira, fashion designer; and moderator Nikhil Mahashur, architect & restorer.
